  • Taipei taxi fares rise for Lunar New Year celebrations

    During the Lunar New Year holiday from Feb. 5 to Feb. 14, taxi fares in Taipei, New Taipei, and Keelung City will increase by an additional NT$30 per ride. Stickers with clear notices about the fare changes will be placed on the back of co-driver’s seats to inform passengers. Cab drivers are prohibited from refusing passengers or taking longer routes, and passengers have the right to inquire about the chosen route. The Taipei City Government Police Department has a hotline for reporting issues at (02) 2311-6409, or residents can dial 110. Other cities and counties, such as Taoyuan, Taichung, Tainan, Nantou, Changhua, and Kaohsiung, will also adjust their taxi fares, with an extra NT$50 per ride. In Hsinchu and Miaoli, fares will increase by 30% based on the original pricing scheme.

  • Taoyuan offers NT$11,800 aid for uynemployed workers’ kids

    The Taoyuan City Government is offering the "Unemployed Workers’ Children’s Study Assistance Subsidy" to eligible applicants. The program provides up to NT$11,800 in subsidies for children of unemployed workers attending private colleges and universities. Applicants must be involuntarily unemployed and registered in Taoyuan City for over four months. Relevant documents should be submitted during the application period, which runs until Mar. 25. Even if applicants have not received the Ministry of Labor’s subsidy, they can still apply for the NT$11,800 study assistance subsidy from Taoyuan City. Documentation can be submitted by registered mail or through the Taoyuan e-government web portal.

  • Apple Sidra returns after passing hygiene checks

    Oceanic Beverages Company, previously under scrutiny for water quality violations at its Pingzhen factory, has announced that its apple cider products now meet health standards set by the Taoyuan City Government’s Department of Health (DPH). This allows the company to resume sales. Earlier complaints had alleged that the beverages produced at the Pingzhen factory contained unknown sediment and did not meet water quality regulations. Following inspections in April and May, Taoyuan’s DPH ordered a suspension of three production lines, effectively shutting down the entire plant. However, Oceanic Beverages Co. has now revealed that production lines two and three have officially recommenced operations. The company has clarified that the apple cider products currently on shelves include batches from an initial trial production on Oct. 27, as well as regular production that resumed on Nov. 16.

  • ’Orange Devils’ land in Taiwan, echo love for island

    The Kyoto Tachibana Senior High School marching band, known as the "Orange Devils," arrived in Taiwan to a warm welcome at Taoyuan International Airport. Their visit is a testament to the strong ties between Taiwan and Japan, which were first sparked during their performance at the 2022 Taiwan National Day celebration. The band’s invitation this year, alongside Taipei First Girls High School, is an effort to further strengthen cultural bonds, as they are set to participate in the upcoming celebration of TGH’s 120th Anniversary.   • New Taipei to expand travel card usage for elderly

    New Taipei Deputy Mayor Liu Ho-jan confirmed that senior cards for the elderly and persons with disabilities will be expanded next year. Starting in January, the cards will cover usage in the Airport MRT, and by July, they will also grant access to other public transportation options like YouBike and cabs. The decision to expand the cards came after receiving feedback from various individuals, including KMT Secretary-General Liao Xianxiang and KMT Councilor Chen Weijie, who expressed concerns about limited card use.

  • Apple Sidra workers allege non-payment of May salaries

    More than 70 factory workers at Oceanic Beverages Co. Inc., the popular beverage Apple Sidra manufacturer, have lodged complaints against the company, claiming that their May salaries have not been paid. The employees, based at the Taoyuan factory, reported the non-payment to the Taoyuan City Government, prompting an investigation by the Taoyuan City Labor Inspection Division.
